Garden in May

I don’t have much garden space this year, but I am so excited about what I do have. I just love to watch my vegetables growing.  Look at my corn.

Can you see the corn?  And, the corn silk at the tops of the corn cobs?  Yeah!  Last year, it got too hot too quick and my corn didn’t finish growing. I was so disappointed. I really hope it makes something this year.

Here’s a picture of one of my tomatoes.  The tomato plant isn’t very tall, but I have a tomato!

This plant is actually in a pot. My husband didn’t know I had already bought a cherry tomato plant, so he bought this one. I didn’t have room for it in the garden, so I put it in this pot.

This is the first year I’ve ever tried to grow strawberries. I only have 2 plants. After I bought them, someone told me I needed to plant them in sandy soil. Well, part of my yard has too much sand so I went over there and got some sand and mixed it in with what was already in the pot. It must have had some good effect. Look at my strawberry!

It’s not ripe yet, but at least the plant is producing.

My older sister and her husband made 2 raised bed gardens this year, a first for them. I think she planted some of her vegetables too close to one another, but hey…she has got one pretty garden. She hasn’t put any new pictures on her blog lately. I’ll have to ask her to do that.

Garden Progress

I wanted to show you a couple of pictures of my small garden.  There’s not a lot in it, but I think it’s enough for the three of us.  Hopefully, we will have some radishes, corn, cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, cantaloupe & watermelon. I hope to have enough to share with family and friends.

Can you see the wire thing in the background. I can’t take credit for this idea. I got it from my electric co-op magazine. The idea is to plant a garden (vegetable or flower) around a compost bin. I’m going to try it out and see if it works.

Here’s a picture of another one. I actually have two compost bins, one at each end of the garden. It might be just a coincidence, but look at the two tomato plants closest to the bin. They are growing faster.

I put vegetable scraps, pieces of cardboard, and dirt in the bins. I’ll keep adding to them during the summer. And, unless we have another scorching summer, having the compost bins will require less watering. If I remember correctly, the article states that having a compost bin requires less watering.

I haven’t used any chemicals on my garden. I did put some organic material on my tomatoes because the bugs were starting to eat the leaves.

This will be my own personal test of using these compost bins in my garden.  I hope it works.  I’ll let you know.

Gardening in 2012

It’s time to start thinking about my garden this year. Actually, I should have already been planning it, but with my new job and other family stuff, I kinda let it slide.

We borrowed a friend’s tiller and tilled up the dirt yesterday.

It’s not a very big spot, but it will work for us. Did you notice the daffodils in the front of the picture?

I’m going to have tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, radishes and potatoes.  That’s if we don’t have another scorching summer like last year.

The house across the street from us got moved and these flowers were left in the yard. The person that lived there was not much of a gardener and these flowers weren’t being taken care of so I moved them to my yard where I can take care of them. I talked to the property manager. He was glad I was willing to take care of them.

These are some of the flowers I transplanted last year. Hopefully, they will bloom this year. Actually, the flowers in the cement blocks aren’t transplants, but the rest of them are. They look better than this picture indicates.

I have one spot in my yard where I plan to put some wild flowers. If they bloom, I’ll take a picture and post it.

I love having pretty flowers in my yard. And, I love watching my vegetable plants grow and produce vegetables. I put some compost in my yard last year. Part of the time I just threw my scraps in my garden. I think I need a new compost bin.

Do you have any gardening blogs that you can follow and can share with me? I’m interested in learning more, especially if the gardening has to do with flowers. And, if it has to do with organic gardening.
